Description
A comforting Southern classic featuring tender chicken and soft, pillowy dumplings in a rich, creamy broth. Perfect for cozy family dinners or a nostalgic meal any day of the week.
Ingredients
• 1 whole chicken (about 4 lbs)
• 2 cups all-purpose flour
• 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
• 1 pinch salt (for dumplings)
• 2 tablespoons butter
• 1 cup milk
• 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
• 1 teaspoon salt (for broth)
• Water (enough to cover chicken)
Instructions
1️⃣ Place the whole chicken in a large pot and cover it with water. Add 1 teaspoon of salt and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for about 1 hour, or until the chicken is fully cooked and tender.
2️⃣ While the chicken cooks, prepare the dumplings. Mix flour, baking powder, and a pinch of salt in a bowl. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually stir in milk to form a soft dough. Roll out the dough to 1/4-inch thickness and cut into strips or squares.
3️⃣ Once the chicken is cooked, remove it from the pot and let it cool slightly. Shred the meat into bite-sized pieces, discarding the skin and bones. Return the chicken to the broth.
4️⃣ Bring the broth to a gentle boil and carefully drop in the dumplings one at a time. Stir gently to prevent sticking. Cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the dumplings are cooked through.
5️⃣ Season with black pepper and adjust the salt to taste. Serve hot and garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
Enjoy this heartwarming dish with a side of cornbread or a crisp salad for the perfect Southern-inspired meal!
