Description
This hearty, Southern-inspired dish features tender chicken in a rich, flavorful broth paired with soft, homemade dumplings. It’s the perfect comfort food for any occasion.
Ingredients
• 1 whole chicken (about 4 lbs)
• 2 cups all-purpose flour
• 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
• 1 pinch of salt
• 2 tablespoons butter
• 1 cup milk
• 1 teaspoon salt (for broth)
• 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
• Water as needed
Instructions
1️⃣ In a large pot, boil the whole chicken with salt and enough water to cover it for about an hour, or until tender. This will create a rich, flavorful broth.
2️⃣ While the chicken is cooking, prepare the dumplings by combining flour, baking powder, and a pinch of salt. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles crumbs. Gradually stir in the milk to form a soft dough. Roll out the dough on a floured surface and cut it into strips.
3️⃣ Once the chicken is cooked, remove it from the pot, allowing it to cool slightly before shredding the meat. Discard the bones and skin, then return the shredded chicken to the pot.
4️⃣ Bring the broth to a boil, then add the dumpling strips. Reduce the heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the dumplings are tender and have absorbed the delicious broth flavors.
5️⃣ Season with additional salt and black pepper to taste, and serve hot.
